The president of Alleanza Nazionale Gianfranco Fini, interviewed by Giorgio Gazzotti in Qn –Resto del Carlino.
“I don’t think so. Broadly speaking we’re still optimistic. The alliance with the Northern League and the Mpa of Lombardo in the south, guarantees a solid majority at the Lower House. It’s inconceivable that the PD recuperate points that it has and continues to have, despite one or two faked up surveys claiming otherwise. When it comes to the Senate I have faith in the Italian people, who are aware of the risk of a tie draw so I think the person who can guarantee a stable government will be awarded in the end”. The decision in choosing Veltroni to run alone has had a somewhat explosive effect on the political line-up. Aren’t you worried it could be the element of novelty that’s attracting votes?“No, because even the PDL has chosen transparent and coherent alliances and most of all because Veltroni doesn’t practise what he preaches. He was supposed to run alone yet he’s lined up with Di Pietro. He was supposed to have presented a coherent formation but he’s put together the Theo-Dem political current (centreleft Catholics) together with the Radicals. The devil with holy water aren’t compatible” Was the break up with Casini really inevitable? “I want to say something very clear on this point. It’s not true that Berlusconi and I told him: “we’ve already decided now you can join. The only thing acquired was that the reference values of the PDL were the same as the EPP, but everything else still had to be decided, including the path towards becoming one big party. Whatsmore, him not wanting to renounce his party’s identity is not convincing, because a political identity is not found in a graphic symbol. So much so that I see he’s now willing to change his UDC symbol for the sake of making a deal with the Rosa Bianca group”. Berlusconi is proposing a broad-based government, even though he’s adjusted his tone, but you have definitely excluded it…..“Making deals with other political sides is out of the question because there’ll be no tie finish. It’s assured thanks to the agreement made with Lombardo in Sicily. In Lazio, the split with Casini and due to Storace having certain established roots impels us even more in making a greater effort, but Veltroni has lost the votes from the extreme left wing sides. So we won’t have any problems. Also because Veltroni can come here to Emilia and talk about the Rome model, but he certainly can’t talk about it in his own home town where the ICI tax is the highest in the country. We’ve already won in the Campania region because De Mita is taking away a lot of votes from the PD and I’d like to see Veltroni going to Naples with Bassolino and Iervolino saying that he’s the novelty”. Abortions, euthanasia, ethical issues. Avvenire and Famiglia Cristiana are intervening in the election campaign. Casini claims he represents the Catholics, Ferrara is making a pro-life list. What’s the PDL doing?“We are against euthanasia and we agree with Berlusconi on the 194 law: the law shouldn’t be changed, but respected in all its parts, including prevention and supporting women so they don’t have to resort to having an abortion. But, precisely because I’m against abortions, I think forming a list on such a dramatic theme is rather exploitative. As to the Catholics, it was the last two Popes who said the unity of Catholics in politics was pointless due to there being no more historic conditions for this. There are Catholics in almost every political party and no one has ever excluded them”. Many are saying the programmes of the PD and the PDL are similar. On what basis should the electors decide to vote for you?“On the basis of credibility. It’s difficult to believe in Veltroni, when he says he’s going to lower taxes, especially when Visco’s sitting in the audience; or when he talks about the security problem, seeing that they never even managed to approve the little security packet; and on the infrastructure situation, we opened a few construction sites, they closed them down. Veltroni if anyhing is similar to Houdini, his slogans are masterpieces of illusions, promising a fools-paradise. He’s talking as if his party colleagues had nothing to do with the government, only me and Berlusconi”. Everyone wants to reduce taxes, but how are you going to do it without lowering public spending? “In fact public spending has to be cut. There are two spending voices out of control: health and certain costs regarding politics. It is not acceptable that plastic surgery bills in some regions of the country are charged to the taxpayer and in other regions people are dying of septicaemia. In bringing health spending under control, the only solution is for politics to withdraw from administering it. Now lets talk about politics, the scandal isn’t on the 900 MPs, that we already reduced, but the uncontrolled spending on the supreme power of political parties at every level”. You announced that you will not present candidates who have problems with justice. But someone spoke about exceptions”. “Maybe someone misunderstood at the time, so let me make it clear. I never said that people under suspicion are out of the list, because there are judges competent in investing anyone. We will not candidate first degree convicts, but only a few convictions, which we will evaluate case by case”. When you say us, are you referring to AN or the PDL?“I’m talking on behalf of Alleanza Nazionale” A while back Berlusconi spoke about the possibility of a handing over of power, two years for one and two years for the other in running the government. Is this an actual possibility?“I’ve got no idea. But I don’t believe in relays; nor in dauphins, either in the sea, or in a dynasty, because I’m a republican”. Let me read you a list of questions, you can either reply with a yes or no? Clinical castration for paedophiles?“For the ones convicted, yes”. The Strait of Messina bridge?“Definitely”. Reinstating parliamentary immunity?“No, no ones ever proposed it”. Nuclear energy?“Yes, regarding the fourth generation”. Having seperate careers for judges?“We can discuss this”. You are in favour of the administrative vote allowed to immigrants, but the Northern League immediately refused it.“Mine was a theoretical consideration, a school guess”. |
